From four corners of the world, they united over a shared affinity for fast music, reckless abandon, and tasteful public nudity. Their show is like some twisted struggle session where the members stand accused and denounced by the audience, and are forced to recite their crimes.īased in Beijing, STRUGGLE SESSION features members of Chinese hardcore punk band Fanzui Xiangfa, Australian synth-grind band Scrotal Vice, Moroccan hardcore band W.O.R.M., and US band Handed To The Thousands. He stands up or walks away from his kit but never seems to miss a beat. While the drummer Aaron seems to be continually drinking beer while smashing drums. Bassist Alfie is constantly losing his pants and performing strange dance moves, just staying close enough to the mic to get back for his backing vox. Guitarist Nevin wonders into the crowd, getting lost, sometimes losing his guitar. The vocalist Oliver leaps on and off the stage in a frenzy, working up the pit and screaming out every last breath of air. STRUGGLE SESSION is “self-criticism-core” at its most intense, soundtracking any room with maximum destruction, putting all they have in to each performance, and leaving the audience a sweaty, heaving mess.

They live by the motto “no stage is the best stage”, feeling much more at home out in the audience – and much more comfortable with most of their clothes on the floor. STRUGGLE SESSION is born from a love of all kinds of hardcore punk from the 80s, 90s, and 00s, mixed with a snatch of grind intensity. We are very excited to play with a bunch of awesome bands but must give special mention to Sydney Extreme-Post-Op-Power-Grind act Scrotal vice who will be joining us on selected dates.” This is something of a homecoming trip for Sydney-boy Bass-man Alf, who for one is particularly excited to finally be able to speak some proper English again, away from his North-American bandmates. Now we are excited to make our way to continent number five, playing nine shows in February 2019 from Brisbane to Adelaide. “In our two-year lifespan we have had the pleasure of leaving our Beijing home to release our loud and sweaty hardcore mess all over China, Korea, Morocco, Spain and South America. As a news website, we highly encourage MORE bands to do this!

Other issues explored will include the importance of music in Maoist China, and why many musicians were persecuted for defending a musical culture that was not their own.Beijing hardcore punk band STRUGGLE SESSION have announced an Australia tour and have sent in a massive update on the band. A detailed account of the sufferings of prominent musicians in Shanghai and their persecution by the government is also given in comparison with the case of He Luting. This document also depicts how the writings of Claude Debussy attracted the notice of those in the highest levels of government, and how He Luting's subsequent defense of Debussy's writings resulted in what they deemed "the most serious counterrevolutionary incident prior to the Cultural Revolution." He Luting's subsequent interrogation and violent abuse (which had the distinction of being the only live, televised struggle session during this regime) is portrayed, as well as its effects on intellectuals throughout China. A thorough examination of the humble beginnings and life experiences of He Luting will clearly portray the ways in which the changing polemics of the Communist Party influenced the musical education and compositional style of prominent Chinese musicians.

This document will show the effects of the ever-changing political climate of Maoist China on Chinese musicians, as reflected in the life and career of He Luting. His bravery and defiance garnered him national attention, and he achieved legendary status for thousands of Chinese intellectuals terrorized by that regime. His outspoken advocacy of Western classical music rendered him a target during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), causing him to become a victim of one of the earliest and most vicious attacks of that campaign. Trained in the Western classical tradition, He Luting promulgated the musical techniques of the West while dedicating himself to raising the standards of music in modern China. Composer and educator He Luting (1903-1999) became one of the most influential musical figures in China's history.
